Christmas finds us in Charlotte, NC enjoying a long overdue visit with my parents and my Mom and I searching for every open quilt shop that is within a 50 mile radius - as many as the husband's are willing to tolerate.
We located a cute shop in Waxhaw, NC call the Quilting Nook. It is located in a very old store front that at one time served as a grocery store that sold baby chicks and ducks. Very neat place with lots of personality. As a token for your purchase (and who can leave a quilt shop without making a purchase) you get a purple crowned small rubber duckey called the quilting "Deva". In keeping with the original shop.
I managed to find some batiks to finish a quilt I am working on and Mom, who hasn't quilted in awhile (even though she was the one who orginally taught me the craft) discovered "jelly rolls". Well, you know as well as I do that they are hard to resist so she bought a Robert Kaufman roll call the Elementals Collection:Nature. Very beautiful colors. When she found a pattern by "Allison Designs" called Jelly Roll World, she was all over it. What she particularily liked about the pattern was the description on the bottom of the front: A Contemporary Pattern for Novice Quilters Aged 12 and Up!
We were going to start on the quilt last night, but conked out on the sofa instead - too much running around. So this afternoon we are half heartily working - but too much carrying on to accomplish much. It is nearly a laugh riot when it's time to thread the sewing machine - both of us need new contacts and can't see a thing - even with the aid of a magnifying glass. Because she is not set up with all of the quilting gadgets - we are using a measuring tape, strips of scotch tape and a cutting mat on the floor to do our strip cutting. That keeps the laughing rolling because of course, neither one of us are spring chickens anymore and this is a awkward (and dangerous) position to be in with a rotary cutter.
I have to leave tomorrow, so I don't imagine too much is going to get done, but it certainly is fun trying. I would look up Jelly Roll World if you want something quick and easy to do. I'm tempted to make one myself.
Happy stitching! Who says quilters aren't resourceful : )
