English Paper Piecing

I visited Carly's Web Fabrics several weeks ago and she showed me the coolest quilt that she was making for the lobby of a Children's Hospital (I'm sorry but I don't remember the hospital name).  The quilt was a rainbow of English Piecing made to entice a child to approach the quilt and look at the tiny figures in the center of each block.  Just blew me away it was so beautiful!

She and her mother spent countless hours cutting kits of these English pieced "blocks" for the next quilt.  Carly is asking her customers to help by finishing a block.  I had never tried English piecing - it just looked too tedious.  It reminded me of making those gum wrapper chains when we were kids - now I'm really aging myself.

I took a kit home, thought why not help out, it is a great cause - sitting on the sofa at night I always need something uncomplicated to do.  I took the cardboard template and duplicated on it on freezer paper (giving me seven pieces of freezer paper).  I took the little fabric squares in the kit - trimmed them down so I would have a 1/4" seam allowance to iron onto the freezer paper (remember shiny side up is sticky). I had all of the pieces ironed, gathered a matching thread, scissors and thimble and parked myself on the sofa.

Absolutely fun and relaxing!  I have made two more kits since.  I'm thinking of cutting up all of my little left overs and just have them waiting to sew when I have some down time.  Would make for an interesting quilt!
